Finally peace for now is seen on the east coast, or as much as can be with the Russian Mafia, as Willow and Aleksei make their vows to one another forever.This story does have some triggers in it, but it is an amazing story and I would highly recommend it!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.4 1/2 Intensely Passionate Mafia Romance Stars! Willow's killing spree for her brother Peter abruptly ended with her meeting with Aleksei. Not the typical unsuspecting mark, as Aleksei was one step ahead of Willow from the get go.This mafia romance was dark, but not gruesomely violent and bloody as some of these stories can be. I liked the way the author balanced the intense connection and passion between Willow and Aleksei, with the mafia drama that swirled around this couple.Aleksei made for a great alpha hero with a dark edge. Deeply enmeshed in his bratva role as the sole heir under his father, Willow's brother played a bigger role in their drama than first expected.Lots and lots of high tension suspense and drama with betrayal, evil, and death. In the midst of all of this, were the intense scenes that played out between the main couple. Willow's and Aleksei's backstory were slowly released during their building relationship that centered around Aleksei's dominance over Willow. Her backstory enhanced her need for his complete control which was slowly achieved with his punishment that was always mixed with pleasure.BDSM scenes that were more erotic than cruel and sadistic which I was very grateful for. The author included a lot of graphic detail that were steamy hot.The tone of their relationship constantly grew more and more intimate as their lives were thrown into heightened chaos and danger.I loved that this was a stand alone. A sweeping Mafia Romance that was certainly worth the read!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.a maze of twists and turns Willow Church had been commissioned by her brother Peter, head of Church Exports to assassinate Aleksei Petrov, a kingpin in the Philadelphia Bratva. Willow knew her brother had a vendetta against Aleksei for years, she just didn't know the details as to why. When the night of the assassination was to take place, Willow finds herself in the position of being set up and Aleksei waiting for her. When the bullet goes astray and Aleksei has taken complete control of the situation, she's given two choices: 1) Hand over complete obedience in all things voluntarily or 2) She watches Peter die and then she will. Not only that, but now Aleksei is telling Willow her brother is dealing in illegal drugs and white slavery! That certainly couldn't be true, could it? What a maze of twists and turns this storyline takes with two strong characters, several mafia families, deep, dark secrets, and a passion-filled chemistry that lights up the pages. This was such a terrific read that I recommend to anyone to enjoys a good mafia genre.

Instead, the book’s primary value lies in the fact that it includes 8 full practice SATs for only about $.02 per page.How is this book different from the 2018 edition of the Official SAT Study Guide (https://www.amazon.com/Official-SAT-Study-Guide-2018/dp/1457309289), of which you can also read my detailed Amazon customer review (#1 on top)? The first 294 pages of the book (the portion before the tests) are exactly the same. 6 of the 8 tests are the same—though the order has been reversed. And the two new tests—which show up as the first two tests in the book—are the October 2018 and October 2017 SATs, respectively, which are not yet available for download through College Board but can be found easily with a Google search. SAT practice tests #2 and #4 are gone, though you can still find them easily with a Google search. If we agree to call the October 2018 SAT test #10, and the October 2017 SAT test #9, then the tests are in the order 10,9,8,7,6,5,3,1.Although 6 of the 8 the tests in this book are indeed free to download from the College Board / Khan Academy websites and print out at home (I expect the other 2 to be available as free PDF downloads soon), the cost of doing so would most likely exceed $19 unless you have a free/low-cost printing option. In addition, there is significant value in having all the tests literally bound together in one place—it makes it easy to stay organized, and since the SAT doesn’t provide scratch paper, you can practice by taking all of your notes right there in the book.In fact, I would suggest that you buy 2 copies of this book: one for taking notes, and the other to keep blank, so that you can review questions later without bias. This is known as the “blind review” method and it works wonders.You will notice that there is no Kindle version of this book, but again, you can download PDFs of the individual tests, scoring guides and answer explanations from the College Board / Khan Academy websites for free, which is far easier than the Kindle format anyway. That being said, it would be nice if the College Board would put a PDF of the entire book on its website as well--the first 300 pages of the book do include some useful advice on the essay, for example--though again, that advice could be vastly improved.Of course, these 8 official SATs are just scratching the surface of what’s out there in terms of official SAT practice material: as of this writing I’ve counted 36 official SATs and PSATs in the new format that are publicly available online—and that doesn’t include other test forms that have been leaked.Finally, in 2015, I also wrote an exhaustive Amazon review of the original (2016) edition of this book (https://www.amazon.com/Official-SAT-Study-Guide-2016/dp/1457304309), which I’m happy to say is also the #1 review of that book on Amazon. An ambitious trilogy that falls just short of a classic Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is such an ambitious undertaking that I wondered if he'd be able to pull it off. The answer is: sort of. The quest is momentous, the stakes high. The premise and themes are as lofty as you can get--the very purpose of human existence.If I were to compare this trilogy to The Lord of the Rings, I'd say the story is more nuanced than the good and evil of LOTR, the plot less linear. And while no world building can match Tolkien's, the worlds that Pullman's creates are amazing: Citegazze with its specters and the inventors of the subtle knife; the world with the Mulafa, who learned to travel on wheels, developed in a symbiotic relationship with trees; Lyra's own world, so similar to ours but so different; the world of the dead; and our own world juxtaposed with all of these.The writing is good and seemed to improve with each book. And yet despite all of this, it failed to rise to the level the premise deserved. Why? Emotion comes not just from plot but from how the characters react to it. And in this regard, the author failed to let us deep enough inside the characters to fully experience what the situation deserved.The premise should feel more cataclysmic than LOTR, not merely the triumph of good over evil, but a more multi-layered conflict between seekers of knowledge and those who would deny the human race growth. So why doesn't it feel more powerful? The answer lies in how close we get to know Frodo and Sam, the intensity of their relationship, and the depth of the secondary characters.Mr. Pullman doesn't let us that close to his characters, perhaps due to his choice of omniscient perspective. But I can't help thinking what this series might have been.The author's diatribe against the church is mild and not pro or con religion, but for or against open-mindedness and the quest for knowledge. There are believers and agnostics that come down on both side of these issues.This trilogy was broad, original, well-written, dramatic and with lofty themes. But stories are told through their characters. And whether it be Lord Asriel or Mrs. Coulter, Lyra or Will, I never felt deeply about them. This is a great series that rises well above most of what we see today in fiction. With a bit more it could have risen to the level of a true classic.A little preachy but otherwise a fine conclusion to an amazing series The Golden Compass brilliantly invents a fantasy world full of adventure, action and allegorical lessons regarding religion and life. The two sequels smoothly carry on the story line and largely continue to keep the readers absorbed and satisfied, but I cannot say that they are as perfect as the original.While the author successfully introduces new environments and characters through the series to keep it fresh, I cannot help notice that his preaching of liberal values grows more naked as the series progresses. Make no mistake, I am happy that this series exists to serve as a counter-weight to the typical Christian fundamentalist propaganda parading as young adult literature, e.g. Narnia, but I have to admit that some story elements in this final volume push the envelope a little too far and make the book suitable for mature audience only, which is quite regrettable as the first two books have been great for even very young kids. Specifically, the climax of this book involves the protagonist, 13-year-old Lyra, committing "the original sin" with her boy friend in the woods within the sight of the last surviving bad guy, a zealot priest on a mission to assassinate her. The ex deus machina comes about when the priest is killed just in time by a gay angel sworn to protect the boy. Yes, you read me right. This book features gay angels (as well as horny ones by the way). The author certainly cannot be accused of a lack of imagination.My other complaint regards plausibility. We are talking about a fantasy series here, so I am not trying to apply real physics to the story. It is the motivation and behaviors of some characters that bothers me. For example, the ghosts and harpies talk, interact and respond in ways totally illogical and unrealistic. But they are minor characters non-essential to the core plot, so flipping quickly past these parts is not difficult.Despite these flaws, I still enjoy reading it tremendously. This series is truly one of the best in its genre.A challenge, but worth every minute This is a challenge to get through and one hat requires a good deal of thought on the part of the reader. It is well worth the effort. Pullman's views on organized religion are a challenge to anybody of faith, but it needs to be kept in mind that he is not opposed to a particular faith, merely to the limits that religion can put on consciousness, knowledge and curiosity. The passage of the dead to their release into the living world, where they are liberated and made part of new life, is intriguing. Especially so in the description of the reuniting of the parts of Lee Scoresby with his beloved daemon, Hester. This is my third time reading the trilogy, this time to my 13 year old grandson who amazed me with his insights and understanding of the plot. I am just about to start reading the first book of the next trilogy to him, La Belle Sauvage.

That "it" is a video clip that will leave you laughing, make you want to binge watch every episode of Dirty Jobs, pull up old QVC clips, check out Evening Magazine, and wish the book wasn't ending! Maybe there'll be a sequel... 😁I love his humor! A fantastic book by Mike Rowe! I love his humor (and always have), I love the stories he tells, and now, I love his mom and dad too. It was really neat to try to figure out "who is this person" in each story before he tells you.Really great read! I love this book!!! Mike’s stories are funny and poignant. Such a great read. Highly recommend!

The format is flexible enough to inspire without dictating what must go on the pages.OK I like that all the drawing/text boxes are different sizes. The only thing I'd change is that there are talking bubbles placed throughout. I was hoping to allow my son to make his own where he wants. If it had been specified in the description, I would have purchased a different one.

Great book...for its day, might be disappointing to modern readers The reason I rated it four stars is because I'm sure, that to readers of the 1960's for whom this book was written, and most of whom lived through the actual WWII, the ending was extremely satisfying, if a bit bizarre. To me, a child of the '70's and '80's who grew up with my fiction a bit more lengthy and involved (Think 'Star Wars and the Beverly Cleary books for kids), the ending comes as, if not a full deus-ex-machina, then extremely anticlimactic.Without giving anything away, let me say that, through nine-tenths of the book, Dick builds the story (and the readers) up to this heart-wrenching climax--and then doesn't deliver. The effect was like being ushered into a great and grand house, all designed and built around a single unifying theme, each room a better, more nuanced expression of that theme. Then, just as we come to the doorway to the central chamber--the ultimate expression of the theme which we have been led, by degrees, to understand throughout the entire tour--we run into a white sheet with the words "THUS FAR AND NO FARTHER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VISIT--THE DOORMAN WILL SHOW YOU OUT." printed on it, and we are promptly hustled out the side entrance, the door slammed behind us.Long story short: If you came here expecting a novel-form of the excellent series of the same name based on this story, produced by Amazon and overseen by Philip K. Dick's family and estate, you'll be very disappointed. What Amazon and the. Philip K. Dick family have done is taken the premise, a few of the excellently written characters, and the story question of this novel, and allowed the story to run, filling out a great riverbed, rather than constricting it to the bathtub-size which was this commercial volume.TL;DR Watch the series instead. It is definitely inspired by this book, but much more detailed and suited to those who want an in-depth story.Things are not always as they seem. Skim milk masquerades as cream. As I progress through life, and accept that I'm not young any more, I also realize that the younger generations do not ingest books the way I do. If you look at the reviews for this book, especially at the 1 and 2 star ratings, you'll find a deplorable pattern. "It was too slow." No, you're not considering what you're reading. "The author is a racist." Definitely no, he's almost drawing a caricature of them to shine a great big spotlight on facism and bigotry in order to persuade the audience of just how evil these things are. "The ending was too abrupt." or "He obviously meant to write a sequel." No and no. After many thousands of words placed in thought provoking ways, the author challenges the audience to decide what the story means. And gives us license to pick the ending that we think fits the best.This story was written in the 60s, and is set then as well. What if the Axis won World War II is the major premise behind the setting. The conflicts highlight the extreme to which Japanese and German cultures could have gone, and the possible effects of living in a land under the control of one, and strongly influenced by the other. Imagine the Japanese concept of place, mixing with facist bigotry, overlaid on oppressed Americans living in a totalitarian world. PKD thoroughly denounces facism, bigotry and xenophobia.But the story is more than that. The plot is hidden from the reader as we see events from several points of view. And the narration ends with barely a paragraph of denouement. If you are not driven to contemplation about the meaning of life or the nature of reality by this work, you should read it again, slowly.Boring as Hell... incredibly horrible crappy writing and stupid. This book is excruciatingly slow and pointless. So incredibly mundane and boring, and I wonder if the author was on meds. Why the acclaim? I’ll never know. Enough about Japanese conquerors obsessed with buying American Civil War memorabilia. Enough about Germans landing on the moon and Mars, and German rocket ships used as commercial airlines that take you halfway around the world in 45 minutes. These are all briefly mentioned in passing, as the focus is on the turgid descriptions of stupid people consulting the I Ching, etc. This junk may have passed for an intellectual challenge in 1962, but it sucks. I put it down after page 60. I flipped around and the pages ahead contained more of the same appallingly boring content. This novel sucks.I refuse to donate this book to Goodwill, as I would not want to subject anyone else to reading this horrible crap. I threw the book in the recycling bin.
