When at last she confronted him with a shocking announcement, a violent scuffle ensued, and Putnam, in a burst of uncontrolled rage, fatally strangled her.
 
Though he had everything necessary to get away with murder—a spotless reputation, a victim with multiple enemies, and the protection of the bureau’s impenetrable shield—his conscience wouldn’t allow it. ONE OF VERY BEST TRUE CRIME READS--EVER ABOVE SUSPICION by Joe Sharkey is one of the best true crime reads--ever.Admittedly, the first 20 percent of the book includes a lot of character background and geographical information, which could erroneously lead a reader to think "ho hum." Yet it's interesting data, and the reader learns a lot about the people involved, the history of the area and insight into the age old feud between the Hatfields and McCoys.Once the storyline fully kicks in at this point of the book, it quickly becomes a read difficult to put down.Initially only having general knowledge of the book, I was surprised to find that the storyline is one I never could have anticipated. Nor could I have conceived of experiencing the degree of empathy I have for everyone involved in this tale.For the first time in my life, I found myself greatly moved with compassion for the perpetrator of the crime, FBI Special Agent Mark Putnam.If the FBI ever wanted to set an agent up to fail, the scenario Putnam is placed into is a prototype. With only 16 weeks of basic training, he is given what is considered to be a "hardship assignment" in the wilds of Eastern Kentucky, better known as "hillbilly country."Navigating the socioeconomic, political, and demographical climate of the area is stressful and demanding. Although Putnam is an idealistic, gung ho, capable rookie, he is without benefit of adequate supervision and support.Add to the mix a strange, unorthodox agent in the two person office who's been moved there as a form of addressing performance issues. Couple that with having a wife and young child who are also isolated and struggling. Then stir in a young, female paid informant who develops a crush on Putnam, and it's a recipe for disaster. What a devastating tale for everyone involved.Once again, Sharkey has picked a unique topic in the true crime genre and done a superb job.A SAD STORY OF PASSION, DEATH, AND FAILURE I was wondering as I read this story if it was going to have a sad ending, and it did in more ways than one. I wonder how I am going to feel after seeing the movie. Life sometimes can be a tragedy.Ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances Mark Putman was a man with a promising career with the FBI. He was hard working, motivated, and an overachiever. His world came crashing down thanks to some bad decisions and an encounter with a female informant that turned deadly. The how and why of what happened between Mark Putman and his informant, Susan Smith, is detailed in this excellent work of nonfiction.Author Joe Sharkey methodically lays out the events leading up to the encounter that costs Susan Smith her life. The early chapters detail the different worlds of Mark and the people of rural Kentucky where Mark gets his first assignment as a special agent for the FBI. Things heat up both figuratively and literally once Mark gives in to Susan's sexual advances.Mark is married with two children. His few encounters with Susan in a car in the Kentucky hills have dire consequences. Susan claims to be pregnant with Mark's child. She sees Mark as her ticket out of Pikeville. She threatens to ruin his career if he doesn't leave his wife. There is a fight between the two. That physical struggle ends with Susan dead from strangulation. The moral decisions faced by Mark before and after his crime are what make this such a fascinating story.Mark knows that the right thing to do is to confess and face the consequences of his actions. But he doesn't do that. Instead, he decides to cover up the crime and lay low as the investigation into Susan's disappearance begins. The author sums up Mark's dilemma with the following: "The impulse to confess was crushing, yet the need to go on was overpowering." It is during this period, after the crime but before he ultimately confesses, that the story is the most compelling.

Powerful, important book -- does the American justice system fail the disenfranchised? At its core, Bryan Stevenson's JUST MERCY is about the inherent inhumanity of the American justice system. As Stevenson puts it, "Presumptions of guilt, poverty, racial bias, and a host of other social, structural, and political dynamics have created a system that is defined by error, a system in which thousands of innocent people now suffer in prison." Stevenson is an attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, an organization that offers free legal services to the poor and disenfranchised. His book is a sobering look at criminal justice from the perspective of those least likely to be treated fairly.JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. McMillan claimed he did not commit this crime, and he had a score of alibi witnesses, but he was quickly railroaded into both a conviction and a death sentence. Stevenson spent years working to get McMillan a new trial, and the two men remained connected throughout the remainder of McMillan's life. It's a fascinating case, one that involves perjury, police corruption, a racist judge, and prosecutors more intent on protecting their political positions than finding justice.Stevenson's thesis is that justice itself is denied for the millions of Americans who are poor, non-white, mentally ill, or otherwise disenfranchised. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. I recommend it highly.Justice, Mercy, and Redemption When I first started reading this book I really had no idea what to expect or why I should even take the time to read it. My tendency is to put things into "liberal" and "conservative" buckets and this one seemingly fit into the liberal bucket and I am a professed conservative. I still am but I have to say that I was moved by this story beyond my expectations. There is indeed so much injustice in this world and there is plenty of opportunity for mercy; even mercy extended in unexpected places. The plight of the poor and downtrodden is overwhelming to consider and this book provided a reason to view people's circumstances before providing condemnation. I would wholeheartedly recommend reading it.Every American Should Read This Book Everyone in America should read this book--what an eye opener! I had no idea that this type of justice was going on in America. Children as young as 13 years old being sent to prison for life without the possibility of parole--and for non-homicidal crimes! Women sent to prison for life for crib death babies when there is no proof that the mother was involved in the death. People on death row who were completely innocent of the crimes they were found guilty of committing. Prosecutors and other officials railroading innocent people to convictions and then giving them death penalties. Judges overruling juries who gave the convicted person life behind bars and instead putting them on death row. Bryan Stevenson has provided an outstanding view of some of the justice being handed out in parts of our country. Most of the people convicted are either extremely poor, of color, or both. Mr. Stevenson, you are an amazing human being for devoting your career to this cause.
