Fred's Puzzles Usually, I take my time and put puzzle books aside after an hour of play. I got Fred's Brain Twisters and Logic and Number Puzzles yesterday at about 7 PM. After taking care of a few chores I started playing at about 8 PM and haven't been able to put it down. The first Sudoku seemed like it was going to be easy, but that was the wrong assumption. The ease of the first few numbers was a gift. Each number after those first few was hard-fought. After being sucked into really wanting to "beat" that puzzle, I went on to sample a few other types of puzzle. So, I tried the Catwalk, the Fill-ins, and then 3 Mintonettes. When I started to feel sleepy I hit the word search. The next thing I knew it was 1 PM. This book is challenging and fun. The instructions and examples are clear. I pre-ordered and it was worth the wait.Arrived in recyclable package Book is not senior friendly PLUS it's package is not recyclable in any recycle center in MichiganThis was challenging and fun--great for the brain! These types of puzzles were all new to me and fun and challenging!

Title: Hurricanes Pdf A Memoir
Author: Neil Martinez-Belkin
Published Date: 2019-09-03
Page: 352
The highly anticipated memoir from hip-hop icon Rick Ross chronicles his coming of age amid Miami’s crack epidemic, his star-studded controversies and his unstoppable rise to fame.

Rick Ross is an indomitable presence in the music industry, but few people know his full story. Now, for the first time, Ross offers a vivid, dramatic and unexpectedly candid account of his early childhood, his tumultuous adolescence and his dramatic ascendancy in the world of hip-hop.

Born William Leonard Roberts II, Ross grew up “across the bridge,” in a Miami at odds with the glitzy beaches, nightclubs and yachts of South Beach. In the aftermath of the 1980 race riots and the Mariel boatlift, Ross came of age at the height of the city’s crack epidemic, when home invasions and execution-style killings were commonplace. Still, in the midst of the chaos and danger that surrounded him, Ross flourished, first as a standout high school football player and then as a dope boy in Carol City’s notorious Matchbox housing projects. All the while he honed his musical talent, overcoming setback after setback until a song called “Hustlin’” changed his life forever.

From the making of “Hustlin’” to his first major label deal with Def Jam, to the controversy surrounding his past as a correctional officer and the numerous health scares, arrests and feuds he had to transcend along the way, Hurricanes is a revealing portrait of one of the biggest stars in the rap game, and an intimate look at the birth of an artist.

Riveting I knew Rozay had a way with words, so I expected a good read, but the struggle before the come up was a real eye opener. This dude been grinding.Great read Wonderful read. Read them entire book in a couple of hours. Couldn’t put it down. The stories told are so real and puts everything into perspective.Amazing story by an amazing writer about an amazing artist Martinez-belkin really captures Ross's trials and tribulation so well. Such an interesting man, father, and artist. Couldn't put this one down. Highly recommend.

Title: No Middle Name Pdf The Complete Collected Jack Reacher Short Stories
Author: Lee Child
Published Date: 2018-01-02
Page: 512

Praise for No Middle Name “Captivating . . . classic [Lee] Child . . . This volume demonstrates what his fans already know: he’s a born storyteller and an astute observer.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Lee Child, like his creation, always knows exactly what he’s doing—and he does it well. Time in his company is never wasted.”—Evening StandardPraise for Lee Child“There’s a reason [Lee] Child is considered the best of the best in the thriller genre.”—Associated Press“This series [is] utterly addictive.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Jack Reacher is today’s James Bond, a thriller hero we can’t get enough of. I read every one as soon as it appears.”—Ken Follett“The Reacher novels are easily the best thriller series going.”—NPR“Reacher’s just one of fiction’s great mysterious strangers.”—Maxim“Irresistible Reacher remains just about the best butt-kicker in thriller-lit.”—Kirkus Reviews Lee Child is the author of twenty-one New York Times bestselling Jack Reacher thrillers, twelve of which have reached the #1 position. All of his novels have been optioned for major motion pictures—including Jack Reacher (based on One Shot) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Foreign rights in the Reacher series have sold in one hundred territories. A native of England and a former television director, Lee Child lives in New York City.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Get ready for the ultimate Jack Reacher experience: a thrilling new novella and eleven previously published stories, together for the first time in one pulse-pounding collection from Lee Child.

No Middle Name begins with “Too Much Time,” a brand-new work of short fiction that finds Reacher in a hollowed-out town in Maine, where he witnesses a random bag-snatching but sees much more than a simple crime. “Small Wars” takes readers back to 1989, when Reacher is an MP assigned to solve the brutal murder of a young officer found along an isolated forest road in Georgia—and whose killer may be hiding in plain sight. In “Not a Drill,” Reacher tries to take some downtime, but a pleasant hike in Maine turns into a walk on the wild side—and perhaps something far more sinister. “High Heat” time-hops to 1977, when Reacher is a teenager in sweltering New York City during a sudden blackout that awakens the dark side of the city that never sleeps. Okinawa is the setting of “Second Son,” which reveals the pivotal moment when young Reacher’s sharp “lizard brain” becomes just as important as his muscle. In “Deep Down,” Reacher tracks down a spy by matching wits with four formidable females—three of whom are clean, but the fourth may prove fatal. Rounding out the collection are “Guy Walks into a Bar,” “James Penney’s New Identity,” “Everyone Talks,” “The Picture of the Lonely Diner,” “Maybe They Have a Tradition,” and “No Room at the Motel.”

No suitcase. No destination. No middle name. No matter how far Reacher travels off the beaten path, trouble always finds him. Feel bad for trouble.

Praise for No Middle Name

Short stories for those who are already Jack Reacher Fans When I'm not reading books germane to my profession as a minister and religion journalist, I like to read mysteries and thrillers. At the top of my list of must-read authors is Lee Child, who has written twenty-one novels featuring Jack Reacher, as well as the twelve short stories contained in No Middle Name: The Complete Collected Jack Reacher Short Stories, just released by Delacorte Press on May 16.The book contains one new story, "Too Much Time," and eleven previously published stories, the oldest, "James Penney's New Identity," having been written in 1999. With the exception of "Too Much Time," the stories start with Reacher as a youth and end in the present day. They are of uneven quality, in my opinion. "Too Much Time" is Lee Child at his best, as Reacher is arrested for a crime we all know he didn't commit. "Maybe They Have a Tradition" and "No Room at the Motel," both Christmas-time stories involving pregnancies, are, well, just okay. The number one rule of fiction is the willing suspension of disbelief, which is especially important when reading Reacher stories of any kind. Reacher is a decorated, West Point educated, ex-military police officer who now travels the United States (and world) with little more than some cash, his passport, and a foldable toothbrush in his pocket. Along the way, he gets himself into scrapes with miscreants, whose crimes he detects and whose just sentence he metes out, often violently, even lethally. In other words, he's a homeless sociopath whose rough justice happens to be directed at targets who had it coming. What keeps you from thinking about Reacher's shortcomings too long, in addition to the fact that the targets of his beatdowns are deplorable, is Lee Child's prose, which I can only describe as kinetic. Child has a way of pulling you along word after word, sentence after sentence, page after page. He makes you want to know what will happen next because you're right there with Reacher, who's wondering that too.If you haven't read any Jack Reacher stories, I wouldn't start with No Middle Name, which I generally liked. Start at the beginning with The Killing Floor. The novels will make you a fan. No Middle Name is for the already convinced.Great Collection, Good to Read Second Time Around I'd read these stories before with the exception of the first one, new, "Too Much Time". Even so, I enjoyed them almost as much as the first time I read them. Lee Child's meticulous attention to detail, along with his excellent character development, dramatic timing, and well-paced plots, makes for enjoyable "page-turner" reading. One fault I find in his writing/stories. Despite that aforementioned meticulous attention to detail, Mr. Child obviously knows very little about the progression of a military career (I am retired after 26 years in the military). The characters often have reached rank much quicker than is possible, to include Reacher. One of the most glaring errors is his brother. The various stories establish that he is born in 1958, and would have graduated from West Point in 1980, plus or minus one year. How then, as in "Small Wars", can he be a full colonel in 1989, a mere 9 years after graduation. Even being promoted at the earliest possible opportunity, he would be pushing it in a highly accelerated year group to make major by then (and since I am a contemporary of Jack Reacher in age and know what the group two years ahead of me did, that also wouldn't be true). Okay, a small nagging complaint for what are otherwise engaging stories. Oh, PS, how in the world do you justify Tom "pretty boy" Cruise in the role of Jack Reacher? I hope the money was worth sacrificing your principles Mr. Child. Jack Reacher sure wouldn't have taken that deal!Middle Initial not needed For Reacher fans this collection of short stories is an enjoyable read. As I understand, this is a complete collection of Child's short stories about Reacher. There is a recent novella, Too much Time, which is included. Having read the 22 Reacher novels that Child has penned, this collection provided additional information about Reacher's childhood, early adolescence, his parents, and family life. There is plenty of action and proof positive as to Jack Reacher's physical prowess. Several of the stories show Reacher's softer side and u8nsolicited sense of caring. A refreshing change of paceI found this a fun read that added to my collection of Reacher facts.

Author: Pia Mellody
Published Date: 1992-06-05

Mellody has written a lucid and informa tive book on a subject little understood: love addiction. Speaking both from per sonal experience and a clinical standpoint, she very carefully defines her terms, in cluding "love addict," "avoidance addict," and, of course, codependence. The last term she carefully distinguishes from love addiction. She also includes information on the recovery process, the marks of a healthy relationship, and the process of en tering into a healthy relationship. The book concludes with a set of journal exer cises designed to help someone in recov ery. Worthwhile reading that is recom mended for libraries serving both the professional and general reader.-Barbara L. Flynn, Chicago P.L.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. Pia Mellody is an internationally renowned lecturer on the childhood origins of emotional dysfunc-tion. Her recovery work-shops have benefited people all over the world and her bestselling books have been translated into many languages. She is a member of the faculty at The Meadows Treatment Center, a residential center for victims of trauma, emotional abuse, and addictions, in Wickenburg, Arizona.

In this revised and updated version of Facing Love Addiction, bestselling author of Facing Codependence and internationally recognized dependence and addiction authority Pia Mellody unravels the intricate dynamics of unhealthy love relationships and shows us how to let go of toxic love. Through twelve-step work, exercises, and journal-keeping, Facing Love Addiction compassionately and realistically outlines the recovery process for Love Addicts, and Mellody’s fresh perspective and clear methods work to comfort and motivate all those looking to establish and maintain healthy, happy relationships.

This Book Helped me Wake Up This book is one of the rare reads I've found that totally shook my worldview of myself, love and the way I see relationships. I am so grateful for Pia Mellody and her work, this book was the first book I found on my journey of recovery from codependency and I'm so glad I did! I wasn't even aware I was a love addict and codependent before I read it. If you struggle with push/pull relationships, feel clingy and that your partner/s always pull away I would highly recommend. It offers great explanations of the cycle of the love addict and the avoidance addict, as well as worksheets and how to begin recovery.Great book for those relationships you just can't win I had this book for a year sitting there. I was in total denial. Started in codependency recovery but knew there was more. At that point to finally opened this book and wish I did it months before. The description of the push and pull dance I play with the love avoidant for years was excellently explained and finally my codependency recovery was heading in a better direction. The activities she gives were perfect and at times SO hard to do because it digs up those wounds we never allowed to air out and heal. It truly gave me the opportunity to lick my wounds and heal them to be in a healthy relationship with myself first of all. I'm very thankful for this book. It really was point on for those relationships, time and time again that is a roller coaster ride of so many High's and lows and hot and cold. I couldn't live like this anymore and glad the exercise helped me finally start healing pain I denied for so long.Pia has a way of expressing and defining terms that ... Pia has a way of expressing and defining terms that make sense. Reading this book, I had several "aha" moments where concepts finally made sense. I've bought two of her other books and look forward to reading them after this one.

Author: Marcin Batylda
Published Date: 2015
Page: 184

The CD Projekt Red studio, founded in 2002, develops and publishes videogames for the world's leading hardware platforms, including Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, and personal computers running Windows or OS X. Gamers have purchased more than 20 million copies of games from The Witcher series, the studio's flagship franchise.

Dive deep into the world of monster hunters, as the prominent characters from the universe take you on a guided tour of the fascinating dark fantasy adventure that is The Witcher. This gorgeous, illustrated hardbound volume contains in-depth knowledge about the locales, the deadly beasts that inhabit them, and the lethal weapons used to put them down.

Helps you truly understand and appreciate the Witcher This book gives so much info on the history of the Witcher and the world it takes place in. The covers are really cool and have a sleek shine to them. I also liked how there was a lot of artwork thrown into the book as well to show the characters, monsters, world, and other things. The contents of the book are. 1.Introduction. 2. The World and its Inhabitants. 3. The Witchers. 4. The Magic and Religions of the Continent. 5. The Beasts of the Northern Kingdoms. 6. The Story of Geralt of Rivia.1. The Introduction is basically 2 pages that talk about how the book is a bunch of info on the World of the Witcher.2. The World and its Inhabitants is 40 pages and covers the history of the land and goes over the first inhabitants, the arrival of humans, the wars, the geography, and finally the different kingdoms. There is a lot of art to show the different regions and its just beautiful to look at and lets you truly imagine what they are like.3. The Witchers is 28 pages and goes over what Witchers are, what they do, how they came to be, how they think and act, their training, the silver sword they use, the medallion, and jobs they do for people.4. The Magic and Religions of the Continent is 34 pages and talks about what magic is, how they use it, the power it has, the types of spells, forbidden magic, and the training to use magic. The religion section talks about the different religions and cults. It goes over the beliefs of each one as well.5. The Beasts of the Northern Kingdom is 30 pages and covers the different species of monsters and the characteristics of each one. It ranges from vampires, wraiths, werewolves, dragons, griffins, golems, and much more. The art work of each monster is stunning and really helps to get a sense of each monster and just how powerful it is.6. The final chapter is the Story of Geralt of Rivia and is 42 pages. For those of you who haven't played the previous Witcher games this will help you understand a lot of what is going on. It explains the Witchers relationship to certain people, what his goal is, why monsters are trying to kill him, the politic schemes, and everything else you need to know to fully understand and appreciate the game.Overall this book is a must get for any Witcher fan. The artwork is amazing and the book covers everything you need to know to fully appreciate the Witcher. I actually have not really played the previous games so I was sort of confused with things, but after reading this I fully understand everything that's going on in the game.A rich and thorough overview of the world Geralt inhabits. Never have I been so fascinated with a video game series (exceeding even Mass Effect) than I am with the Witcher series. I purchased this book to gain greater insights into the world of the game, and it was more than I bargained for - in a good way.The book is presented under the pretext of a compendium providing information about the witcher, Geralt, his adventures, and peripheral information. The compendium is composed by Dandelion, poet and long-time friend of Geralt. He collects works of other authors and statements from main characters to compile an extensive and entertaining historical, biographical, scholarly piece of literature. His voice and character, wit and pomp, are heard throughout the work. The first chapter is a very broad history of the world, from times before humans inhabited it to the times when humans ruled over it. It provides information about the Northern kingdoms, the empire of Nilfgaard. and other places, as well as political factions and relations. It's apparently from the scholarship of a golden dragon named Villentretenmerth. It's a bit of an annoying and bizarre read because the dragon speaks in first, second, and third person; and has a great disdain or at least cynicism toward humans. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating look at the history of the world and how it came to be as it is at the time of the Wild Hunt. The second chapter provides information about witchers, their origin, their creation, and the tools of their trade (medallion, blades, signs, etc.). It was narrated by Vesemir, Geralt's mentor and, according to this book, probably the oldest living witcher. This was definitely my favorite chapter: a pleasant and enthralling read. I actually felt as if Vesemir really wrote, hearing his age old wisdom and world weariness. The third chapter concerns magic and religion. The magic section is perhaps the most intriguing information from the book because it is so well-composed and critically analyzed. The religion section is, well, about religion: the cult of Melitele, the Order of the Flaming Rose, Druids, etc. This chapter is narrated by powerful sorceress and Geralt's long-time lover, Yennefer of Vengerberg. Even more so than Vesemir, I thought a brilliant job was done in convincing the reader that it was her authentic voice - her stern attitude, dry wit, intellect, and intuition. Personally, I don't really like her character as a "person," but I respect her; this chapter smartly captures the essence of the characteristics I respect in her. Then we arrive at the fourth chapter, a bestiary and brief description of the monsters of the witcher (you know, drowners, wraiths, dragons, trolls, etc.). The guide is pretty good, yes. But my problem is its narrator, none other than the man himself, Geralt of Rivia. This chapter hardly felt as though it were in the voice of Geralt, save for a few references to his adventures and misadventures. To be fair though, it is what Dandelion recorded from conversations with Geralt, so not exactly his writings. But his character is utterly vacant from this chapter, which is a tad disappointing, as he is, you know, the main character. Nevertheless, this does not detract from the chapter as a whole - it's a very interesting read. The fifth and final chapter is a rapid overview of Geralt's story. It mostly concerns his destiny with that of Ciri, the fabled Child of Destiny and his adoptive daughter. The information seems to be taken from the books as well as all three games in the series. On that note, reading the entirety of this chapter will spoil the ending of the third installment; I myself stopped short of the last page because I've yet to finish the game. The fast-paced nature of this chapter can be confusing to one not oriented with the story, but if you want a broad picture and some colorful detail, this will satiate you. Speaking of colorful, this chapter, most of all, and naturally, captures the voice of its narrator, Dandelion himself: a tender recount of the history of his friends, and an inflated sense of his own importance in the events of the story. The art throughout the work is beautiful and, more often than not, relevant. However it is clearly not the focus of this book, as a great deal of it is used and reused, pasted here and there. Much of it is stuff you've perhaps seen before from promotional material. Nonetheless, it enhances the narrative and the aesthetics of the guide. In summary, The World of the Witcher is a fun, fascinating, and informative read. The inclusion of characters as narrators is a treat, but not as well done as it could have been. The art is nice, but not impressive and certainly on-the-budget. If you're interested in Geralt, his story, and his world, I would highly recommend this compendium.

“Delectable. . . Dances with drama and insouciant wit.” –The New York Times Book Review“A dazzlingly singular achievement. . . . Striking a perfect balance between the fantasies and neighborhood conspiracies of childhood and the mounting lunacy of Khomeini's reign, she's like the Persian love child of Spiegelman and Lynda Barry.” –Salon“A brilliant and unusual graphic memoir. . . . [Told] in a guileless voice . . . accompanied by a series of black-and-white drawings that dramatically illustrate how a repressive regime deforms ordinary lives.”–Vogue"Odds are, you’ll be too busy being entertained to realize how much you’ve learned until you turn the last page.”–Elle.com“[A] self-portrait of the artist as a young girl, rendered in graceful black-and-white comics that apply a childlike sensibility to the bleak lowlights of recent Iranian history. . . . [Her] style is powerful; it persuasively communicates confusion and horror through the eyes of a precocious preteen.” –Village Voice" This is an excellent comic book, that deserves a place with Joe Sacco and even Art Spiegelman. In her bold black and white panels, Satrapi eloquently reasserts the moral bankruptcy of all political dogma and religious conformity; how it bullies, how it murders, and how it may always be ridiculed by individual rebellions of the spirit and the intellect." --Zadie Smith, author of The Autograph Man and White Teeth "You've never seen anything like Persepolis—the intimacy of a memoir, the irresistability of a comic book, and the political depth of a the conflict between fundamentalism and democracy. Marjane Satrapi may have given us a new genre."--Gloria SteinemI grew up reading the Mexican comics of Gabriel Vargas, graduated to the political teachings of Rius, fell under the spell of Linda Barry, Art Spiegelman, and now I am a fan of Marjane Satrapi. Her stories thrummed in my heart for days. Persepolis is part history book, part Scheherazade, astonishing as only true stories can be. I learned much about the history of Iran, but more importantly, it gave me hope for humanity in these unkind times.—Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street and CarameloI thought [Persepolis] was a superb piece of work, not only for the child's eye view—the developing child's eye view—of a society unknown to many of us in the west, and feared and suspected in proportion to being unknown.... Satrap has found a way of depicting human beings that is both simple and immediately comprehensible, AND is almost infinitely flexible. Anyone who's tried to draw a simplified version of a human face knows how immensely difficult it is not only to give the faces a range of expression, but also to maintain identities from one frame to the next. It's an enormous technical accomplishment."--Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass."I cannot praise enough Marjane Satrapi's moving account of growing up as a spirited young girl in revolutionary and war-time Iran. Persepolis is disarming and often humorous but ultimately it is shattering."-- Joe Sacco, author of Palestine and Safe Area GorazdeThis witty, moving and illuminating book demonstrates graphically why the future of Iran lies with neither the clerics nor the American Empire. --Tariq Ali Author of The Clash of Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity"I found the work immensely moving with depths of nuance and wisdom that one might never expect to find in a comic book. It’s a powerful, mysterious, enchanting story that manages to reflect a great swath of Iranian contemporary history within the sensitive, intimate tale of a young girl’s coming-of-age. I didn’t want it to end!"—Diana Abu-Jaber, Author of Crescent and Arabian Jazz"A rare and chilling memoir that offers every reader a personal, honest portrait of Iran's recent political and cultural history. Ms. Satrapi's provocative, graphic narrative of life in Iran before and after the Islamic revolution is an extraordinary testament to the level of human suffering experienced by Iranians tossed from one political hypocrisy to another. Aside from the humanistic dimension, the beautifully minimalist Persepolis gives further evidence of Marjane Satrapi's sensitivity and superb skill as an artist."--Shirin Neshat, visual artist/filmmaker"Readers who have always wanted to look beyond political headlines and CNN's cliches should plunge into this unique illustrated story. Let Marji be your trusted companion, follow her into the warmth of a Persian home and out along Tehran's turbulent streets during those heady days of revolution. Persepolis opens a rare door to understanding of events that still haunt America, while shining a bright light on the personal humanity and humor so much alive in Iranian families today."-- Terence Ward, author of Searching for HassanBlending the historical with the personal is not an easy task, to blend the individual with the universal is even more challenging. But Marjane Satrapi has succeeded brilliantly. This graphic novel is a reminder of the human spirit that fights oppression and death, it is a witness to something true and lasting which is more affective than hundreds of news broadcasts.--Hanan al-Shaykh, author of Women of Sand and MyrhhFrom the Hardcover edition. Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s graphic memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.

In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran’s last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. Marjane’s child’s-eye view of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does the history of this fascinating country and of her own extraordinary family. Intensely personal, profoundly political, and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a reminder of the human cost of war and political repression. It shows how we carry on, with laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And, finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.

Disillusionment in Iran Finally, in the early 21st century do we receive a woman's view of life in Iran. Persepolis deserves to sit among Hirsi Ali's Infidel and Husseini's Murder in the Name of Honor. Perhaps because he parents were not overly devout Muslims, Marjane was permitted to read to her heart's content. She assimilated copious quantities of political dogma at a young age, which enabled her to see things from several perspectives. We are shown life through Marjane's eyes from her days in elementary school (even then she is a bit of a rebel, unwilling to wear the burka in the desert, though she is not alone here). Growing up in a society where social class and gender matter more than anything else, she feels genuine grief for her maid, who is doomed never to marry the neighbour she loves. Fortunate enough to evade the bullets through serendipity before the Shah's overthrow, she is forced to mature rapidly and learns that she must not blame children for the atrocities of their parents. Perhaps the most profound moral of her childhood tribulations is the price of freedom and the tragedy for those left behind, hoping, worrying and fearing for the fate of their loved ones who were imprisoned for being enemies of the state. Everyone living in the democracy must be grateful they are not suffering the fate of North Koreans.Always, regrettably, the dark puppet-masters are omnipresent. Willing to aid despots in their quest for power, the common people are often forgotten and seen as expendable. With no means to resist armed police (or escape from a barricaded cinema), their insurrections are often easy to quell. Recurrent themes are the deadly chains of hatred, vengeance and bitter grief. Forgiveness is a laudable goal, and though Gandhi succeeded in his endeavours, one is always left wondering whether the cost in human lives was worthwhile. Was there a better way? Could the soldiers have been convinced or coerced to turn against their own oppressive regime if necessary?Although told from Majane's perspective, the stories of her uncles, friends and extended families also receive their fair share of space. Each chapter of the first half reveals more of the history and culture of Iran in the 70s and 80s. No detail is omitted and the harsh realities of a country in the throes of anarchy are laid bare for readers to vicariously experience. Her secondary education in Vienna enabled her to learn more about the world beyond Iran's narrow and artificial borders. Like Anne Frank's diary, as Marjane matures, so too does her writing style and vocabulary. Despite being a comic book, the latter half is full of text and can be quite vexing to slog through. The most poignant and tragic moment comes when Marjane rejects her homeland and chooses freedom over a patriarchal dictatorship.Highly recommend This clever book is a kind of a memoir slash graphic novel slash comic book that’s essentially a coming-of-age story about a girl growing up in Iran.I really enjoyed this book and found it really interesting and thought-provoking. Although it sort of appears to be a light-hearted read, it gets into some serious stuff at times and really gives you some perspective.Overall, I highly recommend this book to both young adult readers and adults alike. What can I say that other reviewers have already said? This book or comic is already pretty popular, and already a highly recommend book so what can I offer that these others haven't mentioned? I don't know, I honestly don't think I can but maybe someone can take away something about what I say. Now there not a lot of books dealing with Iran or the Iranian revolution and if their is I haven't found them yet. Now this book is about a young girl going through Iran cultural revolution and how people change and how her whole family had to change or adjust to their surroundings. Eventually she goes to Europe or France (if I remember correctly) and having to deal with love, liberals or hippies, and racism and mean nuns. I don't think story is the first of its kind but that doesn't mean that it should be undermined. The story has great illustrations and how the author deals with this struggles. In a way you see her loose her innocents through a child's eyes till adulthood. There are plenty of stories of young woman having to deal with change, and their countries sexist views and using their religion to justify their actions. Even some American states do it, so calling us nothing or better than Iran is hypocritical. If your intrested in Iran, or the story of a young girl having the deal with change or racism, or the struggles of living in a very conservative/ religious country I would highly recommend this book. Thank you for reading my review. Now if your looking for another Iran comic book that deals with serious issues like Persepolis then look no further than Zahra's paradise.
