**OAHU LEAKED*** This book covers the inception of the islands to the most recent events as it was was published in 2017. Its as though you uncovered the OAHU bible; like having a tour guide, travel agent, event planner and financial planner all in your back pocket.The most interesting fact is even though the "haiku stairs" has the most magnificent views of the Island, It is illegal. However, without breaking the law or running past security guards, you can actually legally hike to the top another route.. but you'll have to open page 212, once your book arrives in a day or two...The worst fact is that like all volcanic islands, eventually they will die and sink.. Meaning one day Hawaii will not exist. :(. But hey on the upside a new island is forming 20 miles off the coast and in 70,000 years or so will be blooming with tourism.....Buy the app instead of book The book is a quality paperback for 14.25. The reason for only 3 stars is the price and the encouragement and evident need to purchase the smartphone app for another $17.99. It is possible that I can sell the book after vacation but the smartphone app will not be useful. At the very least, offer the app for free or substantial discount for purchase of the book and app. The app offers the same information as the book plus more real time information. The author talks about people offering to “help” but really wanting to sell you something. Sorry, Andrew, but you have fallen into the same mold.If I had not already bought the book, I would probably only buy the app. As it is I will probably use the book and download a different app.I will update my review on how useful the book actually is after our return from Hawaii. As for now, I do find the writer to be humorous.Great trip planning for Oahu. I downloaded samples of a lot of Oahu books and I just liked the vibe of this one. It seems more honest than the rest (in terms of criticizing tourist traps and telling you tricks). I am a big Rick Steves Europe fan and this book had a similar style. We bought this one and downloaded some of the other (Lonely Planet, etc) and we liked this best and planned our trip around its ideas. PS We loved the Polynesian Cultural Center - we ended up making the hour drive twice. Waikiki sucks (crowded and chain restaurants only). The zoo is not good. Lanakai Beach was awesome.

The book I wish I had had in high-school I had read about Mr. Gooley’s courses on Natural Navigation some years ago in the Reader’s Digest I believe. At that time, I was fascinated becau7se he claimed to be able to use natural navigation in cities too. I do not live in the UK and consequently did not have easy access to the course or his teaching. I was thrilled to discover that he had put his discoveries into a book.I am one of those people who learn by reading. Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words but there are times when words are crucial. I had thought the book to be full of pictures without much context. I could not have been more wrong.Mr. Gooley starts with a masterful introduction about determining weather with the backdrop of a beech and an amorous couple. He explains about distances, the wind and clouds before segwaying into his subject. This is not a universal book. The author is clear about the geographies in which the material in the book is applicable.The book is split into several chapters; each chapter deals with a specific aspect of natural navigation. There are chapters on trees and plants, the landscape, the wind and many more, each dealing with how to use that attribute for finding your way. Yes, he does bring them all together. For those who like checklists, there are plenty of those as well. One of the most fascinating portions of the book is when he describes his walk with the Dayak. However, I wish there had been more detail. For example, how did they get away from the bees in the forest?This book is a must read for educators, math teachers and geography teachers because it illustrates how these subjects should be taught. It is much easier to understand the Pythagoras theorem by its application in crossing a river and calculating heights and distances rather than those proofs and out of context problems that students are made to solve at least when studying in India.Over all, a great read and a reference book I will return to frequently.I bought this book because I have a horrible sense of direction I bought this book because I have a horrible sense of direction. What turned out to be fun was using some of the new learned skills with my grand daughter. We used a cell phone app to check our assumptions about directors and took photos of interesting finds on walks.Great if you want to read about the author's background on this subject, not good if you were expecting something else It wasn't what I expected, I thought the book was going to be more in easy to read tips and other information on Reading Nature's signs. I wasn't expecting to read about the author's life experiences. I found it to be boring.
